Ultrafast Broadband Data Sockets
Some properties have built-in Ethernet cabling with data sockets in different rooms. These sockets normally connect back to a central patch panel located near the ONT (Optical Network Terminal).
You can use these sockets to:
- Move your router to a better location, or
- Provide wired internet connections in other rooms
Option 1: Moving Your Router Using Data Sockets
This allows you to place your router in a better position (for example, in the living room instead of next to the ONT).
1. Connect the router in the new room
- Go to the room where you want the router
- Plug an Ethernet cable into the wall data socket
- Plug the other end into the router’s WAN / Internet port
- Power the router on
- The internet light will stay off until the correct patch panel port is connected
2. Locate the ONT
- Find the ONT inside your property
- Ensure an Ethernet cable is connected to the ONT LAN port
- If there are multiple LAN ports, LAN1 is usually active
3. Locate the patch panel
Near the ONT you should find:
- A single network socket, or
- A patch panel with multiple sockets
4. Connect the correct port
If ports are labelled:
- Match the room number to the patch panel port
- Plug the ONT Ethernet cable into that port
If ports are not labelled:
- Test one port at a time
- Watch the router
- When the internet light turns on, you have found the correct port
5. Confirm the connection
- Router internet light should turn green
- Your router is now working in the new room
- Devices can connect as normal
Option 2: Using Data Sockets for Wired Connections
You can also activate sockets to provide Ethernet in other rooms.
1. Connect ONT to router
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the ONT LAN port to the routers WAN port
2. Connect router to patch panel
- Plug Ethernet cables into the router’s LAN ports
- Plug the other ends into the patch panel sockets
Each connected port activates the matching wall socket elsewhere in the home.
3. Connect devices in rooms
In each room:
- Plug an Ethernet cable into the wall socket
- Connect to:
- Computer
- TV
- Games console
- Wi-Fi access point
Summary
- Data sockets allow you to:
- Relocate your router
- Improve Wi-Fi placement
- Use wired connections for better performance
- Add extra Wi-Fi access points
If you are unsure which port is which, testing ports one-by-one is normal and expected.
